    How to Use This Tool

Start by entering the date of the breastfeeding session in the Session Date field. Select the start and end times of the feeding, then choose which breast side was used from the dropdown. Pick your preferred duration unit (minutes or hours) for result display. Click Log Session & Calculate to log the session and view aggregated stats. Use the Reset All button to clear all logged sessions and input fields. You can log multiple sessions for a single day to track full daily feeding patterns.

    Formula and Logic

Per-session duration is calculated by subtracting the start time from the end time, converted to total minutes. Total daily duration is the sum of all logged session durations for the selected date range (all logged sessions by default). Average session duration is total duration divided by the number of logged sessions. Side counts tally how many sessions used left, right, or both breasts. All duration values are converted to your selected unit (minutes or hours) for display.

    • Session Duration = End Time - Start Time (converted to minutes)
    • Total Duration = Sum of all Session Durations
    • Average Duration = Total Duration / Number of Sessions

    Practical Notes

Breastfeeding session lengths vary widely by infant age, latch efficiency, and feeding cues. Newborns may feed for 10–45 minutes per session, while older infants may feed for 5–20 minutes. Track sessions consistently at the same time each day for the most accurate patterns. If pumping in addition to breastfeeding, log pumped sessions separately for a full feeding picture.

    • Log sessions as soon as possible after feeding to avoid forgetting times.
    • Note any feeding issues (latch pain, infant fussiness) in a separate journal to correlate with duration data.
    • Reset the tool weekly to start fresh tracking for new feeding phases.
    • 1 hour of feeding equals 60 minutes, so toggle the unit dropdown to switch between detailed minute tracking and broader hourly summaries.

    Why This Tool Is Useful

Tracking breastfeeding duration helps parents identify feeding patterns, ensure infants are getting enough nutrition, and spot potential issues like decreasing session lengths. It simplifies sharing feeding updates with pediatricians, lactation consultants, or other caregivers. The aggregated stats save time manually adding up session times, and side tracking helps monitor breast health by alternating sides regularly.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What if my session crosses midnight?

Log the session under the date the feeding started. For example, a session starting at 11:45 PM and ending at 12:15 AM should be logged as the previous day’s date, with start time 23:45 and end time 00:15 (the tool will calculate duration correctly as 30 minutes).

Can I track sessions for multiple infants?

This tool logs all sessions in a single list, so for multiple infants, reset the tool between tracking each child’s sessions to avoid mixing data. You can also note the infant’s name in a separate journal linked to the session date/time.

Why is my total duration showing 0?

This usually means no sessions have been logged yet, or the start time is after the end time for all logged sessions. Check that you’ve clicked Log Session & Calculate after entering each session, and verify that start times are earlier than end times.

    Additional Guidance

Consult a lactation consultant or pediatrician if you notice sudden drops in session duration, infant weight gain issues, or persistent feeding pain. This tool is for personal tracking only and does not replace professional medical advice. For preterm infants or those with feeding difficulties, follow individualized feeding plans from your healthcare provider. Update the tool’s session log daily to maintain accurate, actionable feeding records.

    • Alternate breast sides between sessions to maintain milk supply and prevent engorgement.
    • Use the average session duration stat to plan daily routines around infant feeding times.
    • Export logged data by copying results to a notes app if you need to share with healthcare providers.
